What Is A Boutique Hotel?

You might have heard of or seen the term ‘boutique’ hotel when searching for accommodation in a city such as London but never really understood what it meant, or what separated a boutique hotel from the rest of the hotels on offer.

To put it simply, a boutique hotel is one which (usually) isn’t linked with a major hotel chain, and which has been furnished and decorated in an intimate and unique way.  They are usually small, although as their popularity increases, so does the number of rooms on offer, particularly in larger cities. One of the first boutique hotels was, in fact, in London; Montcalm Hotel in top of Park Lane, London.

So what makes a boutique hotel so special?  For a hotel to qualify as a boutique is has to offer exceptional service, complete luxury as well as modern conveniences.  They are typically chosen by people looking to stay somewhere a bit ‘different’ either because they are booking a romantic break away and want to treat a loved one, or because they prefer staying somewhere which offers a more unique experience than you would perhaps receive at a big branded hotel.

London offers some of the best boutique hotels in the world, and although you might think that the term ‘boutique’ comes with a hefty price tag, this isn’t always the case.  Although generally used to describe a world class establishment, there are a number of boutique hotels cropping up around the city which offer good value for money and don’t require you to compromise on quality?

One of the interesting things about boutique hotels in London is the sheer variety.  Many are quirky or quintessentially English such as the Milestone Hotel, lots have historical touches and some are very contemporary such as The Montcalm Hotel.  There is no one style which defines a boutique hotel meaning that there is something for all tastes.  As London is such a diverse city, it is only natural that it has such a wide choice of boutique hotels to offer its visitors and if you have an interest in experiencing a boutique hotel first hand, then London is one of the best cities to do this in.
